Trip Page Five  2002

While we were in Gadsden, I stopped to see Truman Preston, he was one of the 1st. bricklayers that I worked with after I started my apprenticeship. Sadly to say that his health is not good, it was good to see him again after about 45 yrs. + or-. On Sunday August 25th we made our first start in a westward day trip to Decatur, Al to visit my cousin Billy Ray, one of Uncle Zelton's son's and some say my twin!! We arrived about noon but Glenda was preparing Lunch? For the family!! It was again the type of meal that had to be Special!! Two chickens, potatoes, okra, corn, beans, etc. & CAKE!! Marlene swam in the pool with Diane , and the G.Kids, while Glenda and I visited!!

That evening Marlene and I attended Gum Spring's Baptist Church with Billy Ray. He was filling in for the regular Pastor. What an enjoyable day. Unfortunately the next morning after a good night sleep, we hit the road again, this time in a more westward bent!! Lunch in Meridan, MS & dinner in Marshall,TX. Only one more scheduled stop and California here we come!!

On Tues. morning we set out heading west, toward Tyler, TX to visit the G.Grand-daughter of Bertha Lena Robershaw, Louella "Suggs" Lackey, needless to say we ran into a TX size thunderstorm!! However we did find Tyler, and I'm sure their directions were right, however after about 4 or five phone calls to her place of work, we finally found her in spite of the rain!! We enjoyed visiting her and all the bosses as they came through, they did not seem to mind us being there!! We also met her husband, Richard who works in the field for the same company. I am sorry to say that I simply forgot to take their picture while we were there! Another person we had planned to try and visit while we were in Tyler was Ruby Robershaw, but we had found while visiting Mamie that she had died August 5th.

As you can see, returning home has its rewards! Val & Neal brought the G.Kids over for a visit the day after we returned, Marlene had been babying these squash for month trying to get them to grow before we left!! This was the end of our trip and the end of and era in my life, now we take the airplane!!
